B17 Flying Fortress low over your back yard? Very cool. Also, very loud. The thumping of the engines is pretty amazing as it flys away.

Kinja'd!!!

I heard it coming, but couldn’t tell what it was. Anyone know which one this probably is? This is in Indianapolis.

Look’s like it’s the CAF’s Texas Raiders .

I just realised that I saw it landing there the other day. I was confused, because giant planes like that don’t usually land at Greenwood.

Same thing happened to me about a month ago. It happens every now and again but its still a little odd.

I think they tour regularly throughout the summer.

I had Sentimental Journey for over my head in Oregon last summer. So cool.

giant planes like that

B-17 highlighted for scale. Planes have come a long way since WWII.

Now try to imagine the sound of hundreds of those things flying in formation overhead.

Oh yeah, I know it’s not that giant. But these are usually like Cessnas or similar flying into and out of this airport.

Nice! Nothing like the sound of four Wright Cyclones in the sky at once. You can only imagine the psychological impact of bombing raids back in the day.

I’ve seen a handful of B-17, but the B-2 is still the rarest of my “random WTF sightings” because it was in the middle of nowhere and they’re all based on one place (MO).

You know what else strikes me as interesting here is how close the B-17 is to the SWA 737 in size, all things considered. And the V-22, especially when you consider the rotors.

I can only imagine how loud the thumping was from the B-17.

I saw an Osprey in real life for the first time the other day. At first I thought it was a really loud Harley somewhere nearby. Then I look up and see a friggin Osprey with it’s rotors in vertical take off position. No time for a pic as I was driving. And no idea WTF it was doing in suburban NJ, although there is a small municipal airport near where I saw it.

I remember the first time I saw a B-24. My first impression was, “that’s it?”
